A “revolting” amalgamation of three ancient and very different dialects (more like separate languages) all called “pasa”. The letter "y" has very complicated rules.
When before a consonant it makes the "oo" sound, but before a vowel makes the traditional "y" sound in English. When at the end of the word, it makes a "we" sound, as in the word "vy". These rules are ignored and it automatically makes a "oo" sound if there is an apostrophe after the y (ex: y' ).
Similarly in concept, the letter "k" before the letter "o" makes the "v" sound.
