Unlike most sign languages, AASL was not primarily used among the deaf and hard of hearing. Instead it was spoken by all women and men in Albania. Over the years its popularity unfortunately naturally declined, and the Albanian-spoken language took over; however, in the present day there are various revival movements and small communities of speakers in locations such as, modern-day Albania, Novosibirsk Russia, Mobile Alabama, Jerusalem, and Ohio.
