🐌 Emoji Translator 🎲

You can find emojis with EmojiDB.org (a search engine for emojis).

This is the emoji translator. It converts text into text filled with somewhat relevant emojis. It's a work-in-progress so please have patience while I improve it. Mostly I need to filter out inaccurate translations from the system and add plural keywords and synonyms.

There are many different types of emoji, or emoticons. The original emoji were composed of ASCII characters like: (_) and (")(;..;)(") and (^.^). These emojis are still around today thanks to their massive range of possible configurations - allowing people to express almost any emotion they want. This type of emoji have come to be known as "kaomoji" or simply "ASCII emoticons".

ASCII only defines a small number of characters relative to the Unicode standard. Unicode contains all the ASCII characters, and thousands more. The symbols "🎲" and "🐌" are example of unicode characters that can be used as emoji for an emoji translator like this.

Most browsers and phones now support a recent version of unicode, so you should be able to copy and paste the emoji symbols anywhere you like (facebook profile, youtube comments, reddit, twitter status or profile, etc.). If you see a box character like this: "◽️" or any other strange character in place of a converted emoji, then it means your browser doesn't support that unicode character.

If, when you paste an emoji to another website it appears as a strange character, it means that the website is using a font which doesn't have that unicode character in it.

You can also use this emoji translator to search for different emojis which represent your word. Just type you word in the box like normal, and if an emoji is found, it'll appear in the other box. Since there may be multiple emojis representing that word, you can press "Shift" or any other key while your cursor is in the box and it will toggle a new random emoji with that meaning.

If case anyone is curious, the way I made this was to grab a list of all the unicode characters which are emoji-like. I can't remember where I got it from but I'm pretty sure it was from the official unicode website. Luckily, this list comes pre-tagged with keywords. The list is huge, so there would have been no chance of me doing it by myself.

So I scraped the emojis and they keywords and put them into a JavaScript key-value map where the key is the keyword and the value is a list of emojis which represent it. From there it's as simple as scanning through the text as you type and looking for words which match any of the keys. When one is found, I replace the word with a random emoji from the relevant array. So that's how the conversion works.

I had to use JavaScript instead of the word lists provided by LingoJam for performance reasons.

Really, this emoji converter would be better described as an emojipasta translator. It converts text into emoji-filled text in a haphazard, sort of over-the-top way. If you'd like to find out what emojipasta is, you can check out the emojipasta subreddit, but be warned, it can be explicit and a bit weird in general.
